So we've been having grief with our fridge recently - the door not shutting very well. Being a gentlemen of outstanding application, I decide that this can be fixed, with magnets.

So, I buy a big neodymium magnet - exciting! - and I run it around the door seal in a straight line, multiple times.

What this results in is a completely demagnetised door that won't stay shut at all.

Before the missus finds out and berates me, what shall I do?

Run the same magnet over her credit cards as a distraction technique, going you time to get a new fridge seal whilst she complains to the bank.

Someone on here was looking for ideas for flogging one the other day, actually. If the thread could be found the OP may be sorted.

You go somewhere like this:
http://www.spares4appliances.co.uk/fridge-freezer-...

And by a new seal.

In the mean time try child locks that keep the fridge door locked shut...but I doubt it'll seal.

Which direction did you go in, clockwise or anti-clockwise?

Anti-clockwise, and then the other when that failed. I think the magnetic seal is down the far side of the door rather than the top or bottom.

If I can find some more, shallower magnets I can just use them to keep the door shut - but this one came from eBay.

We used to magnetise peoples screw drivers in work for a laugh but you might have a problem getting a DC supply and wrapping a wire around it. Then we did the "hammering it" bit in school, that may present problems. Then you can stroke your seal..... same direction all the time and take the magnet away from the metal object by a decent amount and keep the pole the same way all the time.

And do not ever ever put the magnet on a CRT screen.

Ok you can't just say that, all I want to do now is put a magnet on a CRT screen...what happens??

A CRT is a big electromagnet, sort of. Put a powerful magnet on the screen and stuff will get re directed. Sometimes permanent I am told. Fortunately my, er, ahem, experiment took a few hours to clear. I was 15 and the folks were out shopping so never saw what happened. Think the physics teacher said sommit along the lines of "do not try this at home".

Or just lean it back against the wall. 20 degrees should be enough to keep the door shut, and pop a few bricks under the front to hold it there.
